About TEL:
Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) supports staff at York St John University to use digital technologies effectively for learning, teaching and assessment.
As part of Innovation & Technology Services, we provide guidance, training and practical support to help embed inclusive, evidence‑based digital practice across the University.
Our team of educational technologists draws on research, sector expertise and practical experience. We recognise that technology is never a one‑size‑fits‑all solution, it works best when learning theory, digital tools and educational context are thoughtfully aligned.
Our Approach:
We aim to model effective and relevant uses of technology‑enhanced learning within and beyond the University. We achieve this by:

- Promoting innovative, inclusive and evidence‑based practice
- Communicating clearly using accessible, non‑technical language
- Taking a supportive, people‑centred approach

Systems:
Core Systems
Core systems are provided by the University, full training and support is available via TEL, and there is an expectation that staff will use these systems.
Arranged Systems
Arranged systems are again fully integrated and supported, although staff can choose whether or not to use these systems.
Recommended Systems
Recommended systems are not funded, integrated or hosted by TEL, some training and support is available on an ad hoc basis.
Recognised Systems
Recognised systems are supported by Information, Learning & Estates (ILE), with training available for both staff and students on using and integrating these technologies.
Emerging Technologies:
The Technology Enhanced Learning team identifies emerging technologies that may impact teaching, learning, and assessment at York St John. Each year, key reports explore new approaches and trends to support innovation in education.
Two widely used examples are the NMC Horizon Report > Higher Education Edition and the OU Innovating Pedagogy Report are two of the most widely cited reports, and each year they identify trends, challenges, developments and innovations which may already be in currency but have not yet had a profound influence on education.
