Learn with Lynda – Instructional Design: Creating Video Training

In this month’s Learn with Lynda, we will be showcasing the lynda.com course Instructional Design: Creating Video Training by Garrick Chow. This course is 1 hour and 11 minutes long and should appeal to anyone who is or will be recording digital content for their courses here at York St John University. As with all lynda.com videos, the course is broken down into different chapters and sections, so you can focus on the parts that you most want to watch.
In this course, Garrick Chow shares his tips, tricks, and training techniques he’s learned from over twelve years of leading video training for lynda.com. First, he explains how video training differs from classroom instruction, and shows how to plan content to anticipate your audience’s needs and questions. He then walks you through the process of writing meaningful objectives, scripting videos, and selecting software and a good location for recording. He also goes over the delivery styles that create successful e-learning experiences. Finally, he talks about how to edit videos, and share them with your students.
Topics include:

  • Understanding your audience
  • Defining course- and movie-level objectives
  • Scripting vs. outlining
  • Deciding which visuals to use
  • Preparing your computer for recording
  • Handling mistakes and redos
  • Sharing your movies

I particularly like the sections on ‘Anticipating questions‘, ‘To script or not to script‘ and ‘Do’s and Don’ts‘ of recording.
