Firefly
What is Firefly?
Firefly is a generative AI tool embedded withing Adobe Express that can generate images, edit existing photos, apply artistic styles, create social media content, flyers, and more using text descriptions. All the images at the top of the Twelve days of Adobe Express for Christmas series have been generated using Firefly.
The Ethical AI tool?
One of the key features that sets Adobe Firefly apart from other AI art generators is its training on only copyright-free images. These include images with expired copyrights or content from Adobe Stock. Contributors to Adobe Stock are compensated when their work is used, and they can opt out of having their content used for training the model.
Firefly users also have the option to apply the “Do Not Train” tag, preventing Adobe from using any images they create with Firefly in future model training. This approach aims to make Firefly more ethical, though some argue that opting out shouldn’t be necessary. The broader debate centres around whether AI generators should be trained on art and images without artists’ explicit consent.
Additionally, Adobe has partnered with the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) and Google’s AI, Bard, to verify the origins of images used in Firefly. This collaboration helps determine whether an image was created by a human, generated by AI, or AI-edited. Meta-data is then added to Firefly-generated images for identification purposes.
Using Firefly to generate an image (and an animated image)
Here is how I created today’s header image, and turned it into an animated gif.
Here is the animated version of the image.
