‘TEL’ Me About… QR and AR
Wednesday 3rd February, 12pm-1pm – DG103
A QR code (or quick response code) is a barcode that can be scanned to provide access to information from a mobile device (smart phone, iPad etc.). In an educational context, this could be a link to lecture slides, handouts, journal articles, e-books and much more! Augmented Reality brings an extra dimension to learning and creates an active learning experience. Using the technology you are able to augment sound, video, graphics and GPS data to a live environment. Join us for this session if you want to see how QR codes and Augmented Reality could be used at YSJ.
‘TEL’ Me About… WordPress
Wednesday 24th February, 12pm-1pm – DG103
WordPress is an online platform that allows you (individually or collaboratively) create websites and blogs. Staff and students have access to WordPress here at York St John University and they are using it to create collaborative class websites, to create placement journals, to disseminate and support research projects and to create online portfolios and journals. Why not come along to this ‘TEL’ Me About session to find out how you can use WordPress in your Teaching and Learning or for your own professional development.

- Communicate via the built-in chat facility
- Share multiple presentations and documents
- Annotate and highlight key areas of documents that are being shared
- Share webcams to see who you are interacting with
- Share your desktop
Come along and see it in action, and find out how you might be able to use it in our own teaching and learning.
‘TEL’ Me About… Moodle Workshop Activity
Friday 15th April, 1pm-2pm – DG103
Students don’t just learn from tutors, they also learn from one another. In this ‘TEL’ Me About session we will explore how tutors can use Moodle’s Workshop activity with students for self or peer assessment. The Workshop activity enables the collection, review and peer assessment of students’ work. Come along to this session and find out more about how these and other approaches might enhance your teaching, learning and assessment.
‘TEL’ Me About… Moodle Quizzes
Wednesday 11th May, 12pm-1pm – DG104
The quiz activity enables tutors to create quizzes comprising various question types, including multiple choice, matching, short-answer and numerical. You can allow the quiz to be attempted multiple times, with the questions shuffled or randomly selected from the question bank. A time limit may also be set. Each attempt is marked automatically, with the exception of essay questions, and the grade is recorded in the gradebook.
Quizzes are currently being used at YSJ for:
- Summative exams
- Formative tests for reading assignments or at the end of a topic
- As exam practice using questions from past exams
- To deliver immediate feedback about performance
- For self-assessment
Join us at this session to find out how easy it is to get started with Moodle Quizzes.
‘TEL’ Me About… Piktochart
Monday 6th June, 1pm-2pm – DG104
Don’t have the design skills to create a poster or infographic? No problem – Piktochart is an easy to use tool that helps non-designers create visually appealing posters and infographics. Use one of Piktocharts templates to present your data or build your own with their built in graphics and visuals. Whether you are wanting to create a poster to disseminate your own research or you would like you students to create one to disseminate theirs, Piktochart might be the tool for you.
